Your First Class at 1MR

If you’re a little nervous about your first class, that’s normal. Most people are. A lot of our members had never thrown a punch before they walked in.

So we built your first class around that. You get your own coach for the whole class, your own heavy bag, and nobody watching you except the person helping you.

Here’s exactly what happens, start to finish.

Your first class, in short

Every 1MR class is beginner-friendly.

  • A regular 45-minute Boxing or Kickboxing class: real technique, fully instructed and set to music
  • A coach with you the entire time
  • Warm-up, strength and conditioning, then three rounds on your own bag
  • Gloves and wraps provided
  • No partners, no sparring
  • Arrive 10 minutes early
  • Plan about 15 minutes after class to talk through what’s next

Step 1

Before you come

Waiver, what to wear, what to bring

Fill out your waiver

It’s digital. The link comes with your booking confirmation, so do it before you arrive and you can skip the paperwork at the door. If you’re 16 or 17, a parent or guardian signs it.

Pick Boxing or Kickboxing

Either works for a first class. If you’ve never trained before, we usually suggest Boxing because there’s less to coordinate. But go with whatever fits your schedule. You’ll have fun either way.

What to wear

Comfortable workout clothes you can move in. Train barefoot (we recommend it for Kickboxing) or in clean indoor training shoes.

What to bring

A water bottle (there’s a water filler at the gym), a hair tie if you need one, and a change of clothes if you’re heading somewhere after. Both locations have change rooms.

What we provide

Gloves and hand wraps. You don’t need to buy anything.

Food

A light snack about an hour before is plenty. A big meal right before isn’t fun.

Step 2

Getting here

Woodbridge and Toronto: address, parking, transit
Woodbridge · Vaughan

Woodbridge

180 Trowers Rd, Unit 26
Woodbridge, ON L4L 8A6

In Pine Valley Business Park.

Free parking right at the door. Coming by transit? YRT runs along Hwy 7, close by.

Step 3

When you arrive

Get there 10 minutes early

Get there 10 minutes before class. Your coach will meet you, get you into your gloves and wraps, and show you a few basics before class starts: how to stand, where your hands go, how to throw your first punches. Then you settle in at your bag.

If you have an injury or anything you’re working around, tell your coach here. They’ll adjust what you do.

Step 4 · 45 minutes

The class, start to finish

Minute by minute, plus why it isn’t fit-box

Every class is 45 minutes and fully instructed. There’s never a minute where you’re standing around wondering what’s next or left to figure it out on your own. Your coaches call every exercise, every combination and every round. The music sets the pace and the mood, so while it’s a real challenge, it’s a fun one. Most people are surprised how fast 45 minutes goes.

Minutes 0–5

Warm-up

Calisthenics and dynamic stretching to get your body moving.

Minutes 5–20

Strength and conditioning

Full body: upper body, lower body and abs. Some days it’s weights, some days bodyweight. It changes every class.

Minutes 20–45

Three rounds on the bag

This is the part you came for. Each round builds on the last, adding to the combination you’re working on. Every class has a focus, like speed vs. power, body shots, footwork or defence, with cardio pushes to finish each round.

After class

Optional stretch

Sometimes guided, sometimes on your own.

This isn’t fit-box. Don’t let the music fool you. You’re learning real boxing and kickboxing technique (stance, footwork, combinations and defence), taught and corrected every round.

The whole way through, your coach is beside you: showing you the next move, fixing your form, and telling you when to slow down. Modifications are part of every class. Take them whenever you need them. Resting is normal, especially on day one.

What you’re worried about, and what actually happens

Partners, fitness, keeping up, being watched
“I’ll have to partner with someone or get hit.”
No. Boxing and Kickboxing classes are heavy bag only. Your bag, nobody else’s. No sparring.
“I’m not fit enough yet.”
The class is how you get fit. Every exercise has a modification, and your coach will tell you to pace yourself.
“I won’t know what to do, or I won’t keep up.”
Every minute is instructed, so you’re never left guessing what’s next. Your coach is with you the whole class, and you go at your pace.
“Everyone will know what they’re doing and watch me.”
Everyone in the room had a first class too. They’re busy with their own bag.
“I’m not coordinated.”
Coordination comes with reps, not talent. That’s also why we suggest starting with Boxing.

Who’s in the room

Who you’ll train with, and who coaches you

Business owners, nurses, teachers, accountants, people in tech and construction, university students, parents. Men and women from 16 to 71. Plenty of them had never set foot in a boxing gym before their first class. That’s what makes 1MR different from a typical combat gym: the room isn’t fighters, it’s everyone, and anyone fits in.

Who’s coaching you

Your coaches are real fighters, some still competing, some retired. What they have in common is that they love sharing the sport with people who’d never call themselves fighters, as a way to get fit and live healthier. You get the same technique they trained with, coached for your goals, not for a fight.

Step 5 · about 15 minutes

After class

What we’ll go over with you

Plan for about 15 minutes. Your coach will sit down with you and go over the schedule, our programs, membership options and any current promos. Memberships are built around how often you want to train and how long you want to commit. You’ll leave knowing exactly what’s available, and the choice is yours.

Questions people ask before their first class

Are 1MR classes beginner-friendly?

Yes. Every class is beginner-friendly and fully instructed, from the warm-up to the last round. Many of our members started with zero boxing or kickboxing experience, and on your first class a coach is assigned to you the entire time.

Is this a fit-box or cardio boxing class?

No. It’s set to music and it’s a great workout, but you’re learning real boxing and kickboxing technique from coaches who’ve fought. Your form gets corrected every round, and your skills keep improving the longer you train.

Do I need to be in shape to start?

No. Plenty of our members hadn’t worked out in years before their first class. Getting you in shape is our job, not something you need to do first. Every exercise can be modified, and your coach will tell you when to slow down.

Do I need my own gloves?

No. We provide gloves and hand wraps for your first class.

Boxing or Kickboxing first?

Either. If you’ve never trained, Boxing is a little easier to pick up. Choose whichever time fits your week.

Will I be sore after?

You might be, and that’s normal. It’s your body telling you it worked hard and tried new movements. You may feel muscles you didn’t know you had, mostly in your shoulders, core and legs. It’s part of the process, and it eases off as your body gets used to training.

I have an injury. Can I still come?

Tell your coach when you arrive. They’ll adjust the exercises so you can train around it. If you’re unsure whether you should be exercising at all, check with your doctor first.

Is there an age limit?

Not at the top end. We have members in their 70s, and age is never a reason not to start, especially when it comes to finding something new you love doing. Adult classes start at 16, and if you’re under 18 a parent or guardian signs your waiver.

What does the first class cost?

Nothing. Your Free Intro is on us.
